The short answer
Lip Neutralization at Mari Esthetics in West Edmonton is $200 per session, about 120 minutes, with a $75 deposit; most clients need 2–4 sessions. Give your lips a prep week first: fragrance-free balm morning and night, more water, a bedroom humidifier, no scrubbing or picking, and tell Marinelle about cold sores, filler and medications.
At Mari Esthetics, a private home studio in West Edmonton, Lip Neutralization is $200 per session for about 120 minutes (two hours), with a $75 deposit. Most clients need 2–4 sessions, and a consultation decides whether it suits you. This post isn't about the appointment itself. It's about the seven days before it, because lips that arrive soft instead of split are what Marinelle Trevino, the Mari behind Mari Esthetics, hopes to see when you sit down. Book your Lip Neutralization session here.
November in Edmonton is hard on lips. The furnace runs all day, the wind at the bus stop finishes the job, and the calendar fills up fast: the Rocky Mountain Wine & Food Festival is at the Edmonton Convention Centre on November 6 and 7 (Daily Hive's November guide), and the holiday photos start right after. If you're planning your first session for this month, your prep week starts now.
Why your lips need a prep week in an Edmonton November
Lip Neutralization works with your skin, not on top of it. Pigment is laid in gradually to soften cool, dark or uneven tones, and the surface it goes into matters. The Spanish permanent makeup artist Janire Aguado writes that in fall and winter, wind, dry air and the jump from cold streets to heated rooms dehydrate skin and can affect how pigment holds (her fall and winter care guide). That describes a West Edmonton commute in one sentence.
Some studios are firm about it. The New York studio Alena Brow Art says lip neutralization can't be done on sunburned, flaking, severely chapped or irritated lips, and that lips should be intact, with no cracks or open areas (Alena Brow Art's lip neutralization page). Prep week is how you avoid a wasted trip.
What Marinelle looks at first
Before Marinelle chooses a single pigment, she looks at your lips. As the Lip Neutralization service page explains, the appointment starts with a detailed consult on your lip history, your undertone and realistic colour goals, with a patch or colour test when it's appropriate. Dry, cracked lips make that read harder, because flaky skin hides the real tone underneath.
That's why the week before matters. You can't change your undertone, and you don't need to. You can make sure Marinelle is looking at your lips on a good day.
Your 7-day Edmonton prep week
This is our simple version, built from what several Latin American studios ask of their clients. Dani Osorio Studio in Medellín, Colombia, asks clients to moisturize their lips daily for at least 4 days before, stop long-wear lip colour 4 days before, pause retinoids and acid exfoliants 7 days before, and skip alcohol and energy drinks for 24 hours (Dani Osorio's lip neutralization page). A Bogotá lip micropigmentation studio adds plenty of water, a week without lip products that contain retinol, salicylic acid or strong scents, and telling your artist about every medication and supplement (their prep guide). Rules differ from studio to studio, so treat this as a starting point and ask Marinelle what she wants from you.
| When | What to do | The Edmonton version |
|---|---|---|
| Days 7 to 5 | Plain, fragrance-free balm morning and night; more water; pause retinoid or acid products near your mouth | Balm before the toque, balm before the pillow. Run a humidifier in the bedroom while the furnace works overnight. |
| Day 4 | Stop long-wear and transfer-proof lip colour | Switch to balm for the office, the rink and the school run. |
| Days 3 to 2 | Keep up the balm and water; don't lick, don't pick | Wrap a scarf over your mouth at windy LRT stops instead of licking your lips. |
| Day 1 | No alcohol or energy drinks; sleep well | If the Wine & Food Festival lands the night before, move one or the other. |
| Appointment day | Clean, bare, moisturized lips; eat a normal meal | Leave the lipstick at home. Marinelle needs to see your natural tone. |
The don'ts that feel like help
Licking your lips feels like relief and makes them drier once the Edmonton wind hits. Pulling at dry flakes leaves tiny open spots. Minty, cinnamon or heavily flavoured balms can sting lips that are already irritated. And a hard scrub the night before is the opposite of what you want; if you were raised on lemon or sugar tricks to lighten dark lips, read why we say leave the lemon in your water.
When to move your appointment
Call or rebook if your lips are cracked, split, windburned or sunburned, or if you feel a cold sore starting. If you've ever had cold sores, talk to your doctor before you book about whether you need a plan for the days around your session. Alena Brow Art schedules lip neutralization at least 4–6 weeks after injectable lip filler, once swelling has fully settled, and says not to stop or change any prescribed medication, including blood thinners, without your healthcare provider's approval. Tell Marinelle about filler, cold sores and medications when you book, and let her decide the timing.
From Marinelle's chair
Marinelle works one-on-one, one client at a time, in her private West Edmonton home studio, so the appointment isn't rushed. If your lips arrive split from a week of wind chill, she may suggest waiting a few days rather than working on skin that isn't ready. That isn't a setback. It's the same care you're putting into your prep week.
Whether you're a nurse coming off nights with N95 marks around your mouth, a student living on energy drinks through midterms, or a mom from Callingwood or Lewis Estates who's been told her whole life to scrub her lips lighter, you'll be met with respect, not correction. Dark lips aren't a problem to fix. Neutralization is simply an option if you want a more even base.
After the session, the winter habit continues
The balm habit you built doesn't stop after your appointment. Mari's aftercare asks you to use the aftercare provided, keep lips hydrated but not over-saturated, keep them away from sun, tanning beds and chlorinated water while they heal, let skin shed on its own without picking, and skip lip products with strong actives until you're fully healed. For spacing between visits and a full winter calendar, see the West Edmonton session planner. If your nude lipstick keeps turning grey, this post explains why, and if you've quit smoking and your lips haven't caught up yet, start here. Once the base is even, Lip Blush ($250, about 120 minutes, $75 deposit) is the optional colour step.
Quick answers
Can I get lip neutralization with chapped lips? It's best not to. Many artists won't work on cracked, flaking or irritated lips, so use the week before to get them soft and intact, and ask Marinelle if you're unsure.
Should I exfoliate my lips before the appointment? Skip harsh scrubs. Steady balm and water do more for your lips than scrubbing the night before.
Can I wear lipstick to the appointment? Come with clean, bare, moisturized lips so Marinelle can see your natural tone. Many studios ask you to stop long-wear lip colour a few days before.
Do I need to stop my skincare? Many studios ask clients to pause retinoids and acid exfoliants near the mouth for about a week. Never stop a prescribed medication without your doctor's approval.
How much is lip neutralization in West Edmonton? At Mari Esthetics it's $200 per session, about 120 minutes, with a $75 deposit. Most clients need 2–4 sessions.
