Leave the Lemon in Your Water, Edmonton: Dark Lips, Group-Chat Remedies and What Lip Neutralization Really Does

Dark and two-toned lips aren't a flaw. Why lemon, baking soda and toothpaste hacks backfire, what to know before buying a whitening lip product in Canada, the winter habits to drop, and what Lip Neutralization in West Edmonton actually does.

Marinelle Tala·

Maybe it was a voice note from your cousin. Maybe it was a video promising pink lips in seven days with half a lemon and some sugar. Or maybe it's a "whitening" lip balm sitting in your online cart right now.

First things first: your lips are not a stain to scrub off. Deep, cool-toned and two-toned lips are completely normal, and they've always been glamorous. Grazia México recently celebrated the "glazed latino" look, where glowing skin meets wine, chocolate and plum lips, as part of a long tradition in Latina beauty and among women of colour. Dark lips are a look, not a flaw.

So leave the lemon in your water, Edmonton. Here's why the kitchen-cupboard fixes backfire, which winter habits to drop, and what Lip Neutralization actually does if you'd like a more even base.

Dark lips are not a problem to solve

Plenty of women in every community have naturally deeper, cooler or two-toned lips, and even Consumer Reports en Español captioned a photo reminding readers that two-toned lips are common and beautiful. Wanting an even base so your nude or pink lipstick shows up true is simply a preference. No shame in loving your natural lips, and no shame in wanting a change.

Why the lemon (and the baking soda, and the toothpaste) backfires

Lip skin is thinner than the skin on your face and has no oil glands of its own, as Madrid aesthetic doctor Dra. Ubillos explains. That makes it easy to irritate.

  • Lemon: A Spanish lip-care explainer from La Bouche Parfaite calls lemon the most common mistake: it's acidic, it irritates delicate lip tissue, and that irritation can push pigment cells to darken the area, while the acid never reaches where your colour comes from. Dermal Method adds that lemon can make skin more sun-sensitive, which can mean more spots, not fewer. Thinner lip skin has even less defence.
  • Baking soda: Both sources say it mostly just scrubs and upsets the skin's protective barrier, with no real effect on pigment.
  • Toothpaste and harsh scrubs: Same story. Rubbing more doesn't change colour. It just leaves lips raw.

Honey or a gentle balm can soothe and hydrate, but as Dermal Method notes, home remedies don't change how pigment is made. The group chat means well. Your lips still deserve better than baking soda.

Before you buy a "whitening" lip product online

Health Canada keeps a public advisory on unauthorized skin-lightening products, some labelled to contain hydroquinone and tretinoin. In Canada, hydroquinone above 2% is a prescription drug, and mercury is prohibited in cosmetics. If you've bought something online and you're not sure what's in it, check the advisory and ask a pharmacist before it goes anywhere near your mouth.

Furnace on, tongue off: winter habits that make lips look worse

Between furnace air and windy LRT stops, lips take a beating. Dra. Ubillos lists the classic mistakes:

  • Licking your lips. Saliva irritates, then evaporates and leaves them drier than before. At -25 it's a losing game.
  • Peeling and biting the flakes. Every little tear is more irritation to heal.
  • Minty, eucalyptus or flavoured balms. The tingly one living in your parka pocket since 2019 might be part of the story.
  • Over-scrubbing and wearing matte lipstick over chapped lips.

Chapped lips look duller and heal worse, and the lip-care sources above link ongoing irritation to darkening. Reapply a plain, fragrance-free balm, pull your scarf over your mouth at the bus stop, and wear SPF lip balm outside.

New dark patch? That's a doctor visit, not a lip scrub

Consumer Reports en Español explains pigmented contact cheilitis: lip darkening set off by an ingredient in a lip product, toothpaste or even a food. Dermatologist Dr. Adeline Kikam noted it can look more noticeable on women of colour, and Dr. Aegean Chan said it's often diagnosed late, with patch testing used to find the trigger.

See your family doctor or a dermatologist if your lip colour changes suddenly, spreads, itches or hurts, if a single dark spot changes, or if it began after a new product or medication. Pigment can't fix a reaction that's still happening, which is why Marinelle always starts with a consultation.

What Lip Neutralization actually is

Lip Neutralization is a permanent makeup treatment that uses carefully chosen corrective pigment to balance cool, dark or uneven lips into a more even base. Soft colour can come later with Lip Blush.

PMU artist Tiffany Castillo, who works in Mexico and Brazil, described the colour logic to Ecuador's Expreso: coral tones to balance purplish lips, warm-based pinks for brownish lips. Neutralize first, then choose the final colour.

What to expect at Mari Esthetics:

  • Gradual, not overnight. Most clients need 2 to 4 sessions, depending on their pigmentation and how their lips heal.
  • About 2 hours per appointment, $200, with a $75 deposit to hold your spot.
  • Consultation first. Marinelle checks whether you're a good candidate (never over an active cold sore or lip infection) and gives you aftercare instructions.

FAQ

Does lemon lighten dark lips?

There's no reliable evidence it does, and it can irritate lips and make them darker.

Are whitening lip creams safe?

Check Health Canada's advisory first. Hydroquinone above 2% is prescription-only in Canada, so ask a pharmacist about anything you're unsure of.

Will Lip Neutralization make my lips pink?

The goal is an even, balanced base that suits your undertone, not someone else's lips. Colour can be added afterwards with Lip Blush.

Can it fix the dark shadow above my upper lip?

No. That's skin, not lip. Dermatologist Leire Barrutia told El Español that this kind of shadow is often melasma, so it's a question for your doctor.

Keep the lemon for your water

Keep the lemon for your water and the pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. Bring your lips to someone trained to work with them. Book your Lip Neutralization consultation at Mari Esthetics in West Edmonton and let's talk about the base you actually want.
