Your Lip Combo, Minus the Pencil in Your Parka Pocket: Lip Blush for Edmonton Women Who Grew Up on Brown Liner
Love a lip combo but tired of redrawing it with cold hands at -20? How lip blush works for that look, how to choose your style and colour, and what to bring to your West Edmonton appointment.
Marinelle Tala·

You know the routine. Saturday night, mirror light on, brown liner traced just along the edge, a lighter shade pressed into the middle, a dot of gloss. Maybe it's for this weekend's Latin After Dark at the Rec Room in South Edmonton Common. It looks perfect. Then it's minus 20 at the bus stop, your mittens are on, the gloss is catching toque fuzz in the wind, and the liner is rolling around somewhere in your parka pocket.
A lot of Edmonton women would love that "done" lip without redrawing it every morning. That's where lip blush comes in, with a few honest limits. Here's how to choose your style and colour, and what to bring to your West Edmonton appointment.
The lip combo didn't start on TikTok
Darker liner, lighter lip, a little shine. Black and Latina women have worn this look for decades, partly because, as Glamour España points out, brands didn't make liners in their shades, so women reached for brown brow and eye pencils instead. Chicana style in Los Angeles turned it into a signature, and icons from Selena to Rosalía are known for it. As HipLatina puts it, learn where the look came from, then make it your own.
October is Latin American Heritage Month in Canada, and Edmonton's Latin community is out celebrating, including the Between Worlds Día de los Muertos show at Festival Place in Sherwood Park on October 30. Whether your lip combo came from your mom, your tía, your tita or the auntie whose liner never moves, or you just love the look, this one's for you.
What lip blush can (and can't) do for a lip-combo lover
Lip blush is a semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo that enhances your natural lip colour. Marinelle custom-blends the pigment for your skin tone, and the result can improve the look of your lip shape and symmetry with a soft, natural tint. With proper aftercare and periodic touch-ups, results typically last 2 to 3 years. At Mari Esthetics, a session takes about 2 hours and costs $250, with a $75 deposit to hold your time.
In Spain, permanent makeup artists have started talking about a semi-permanent "lip combo." Madrid artist Valentina Troni told ¡HOLA! about a very soft outline that blurs inward into warmer, pinker tones, and artist Carmela Dávila describes her gentler version as a watercolour effect.
Now the honest part: lip blush is a soft tint with gentle definition, not a crisp, drawn-on brown outline. Plenty of women still add liner or gloss for a night out. The difference is that on a Tuesday morning, a swipe of balm already looks finished.
Blurred, bitten or a little more defined: pick your style
Think of lip blush looks as a spectrum:
- Watercolour or blurred. Colour sits softly toward the centre and melts out at the edges, the "cloud lips" idea.
- Bitten. A soft flush all over, like you just finished a cherry paleta. Makeup artist Regina Capdevilla told ¡HOLA! the blurred, bitten lip is her pick for the style of 2026.
- A little more defined. Edges that look gently shaped. The closest cousin to your liner routine, still soft.
To decide, think about your real week, not your camera roll: 12-hour shifts at the Misericordia with no mirror in sight, school drop-off in Callingwood before a downtown standup, or a full face every weekend. Marinelle designs the final look with you in the chair, based on your lips and the way you actually wear makeup.

Colour is colour theory, not a lipstick shade
Troni compares choosing lip pigment to choosing hair colour: it's about how the pigment reacts with your natural lip tone, not grabbing a lipstick off a shelf.
As a general starting point (Marinelle custom-matches every client):
- Many fair and medium skin tones with neutral or cool undertones look lovely in soft rosy shades.
- Warm and olive undertones often suit coral, peach or warm rose.
- Deeper skin tones often wear richer berry-rose and warm brown-rose beautifully.
That undertone-first idea echoes makeup artist Paula Marcos in the same ¡HOLA! piece. One more note: Troni says a soft technique like this isn't ideal on lips that are already very pigmented, purple or brown, because the result can look flat or too intense. If your lips are very dark, cool or two-toned, read our Lip Neutralization guide first.
Healed colour is the quiet version of day one
Right after your appointment, the colour looks bolder than it will end up. As your lips heal, it softens and lightens into the tint you'll actually live with, so plan for the quiet version. Dávila told ¡HOLA! you don't see the final result for at least a month, and Troni adds that the lighter and more natural the result, the sooner it fades, so very soft styles may want a touch-up sooner. Bring these to your appointment
- A selfie of your favourite lip combo on you, not a Pinterest stranger.
- A photo of your bare lips in daylight, no makeup.
- The liner and lipstick shades you actually buy and rebuy.
- Any cold-sore history, so you can plan ahead.
- An honest answer to this: how "done" do you want to look at 7 a.m.?

Lip blush in Edmonton: quick FAQ
Can lip blush look like a lip combo?
It can give you a soft tint with gently defined shape, inspired by the combo. It isn't a hard outline, and once you're healed you can always add liner on top.
Will it look too pink on my skin?
The pigment is custom-matched to your skin tone and natural lip colour. Very dark or cool lips may do better with Lip Neutralization first.
How long does lip blush last?
Typically 2 to 3 years with proper aftercare and periodic touch-ups.
How long is the appointment, and what does it cost?
About 2 hours and $250, with a $75 deposit to book.
Keep the lip combo. Lose the pencil in your parka pocket.
