The short answer
Most clients need 2 to 4 Lip Neutralization sessions, depending on how dark the lips are and how they heal. At Mari Esthetics’ private studio in West Edmonton, each session is $200 for about 120 minutes, with a $75 deposit to book. Marinelle sets the spacing at your consultation, and you pay per session.
7:10 a.m., minus 27, a red light on 170 Street. Peach corrector, then concealer, then a nude, all in the rear-view mirror. If that’s your morning, the first question about lip neutralization is usually “how many sessions will this take?” At Mari Esthetics’ private home studio in West Edmonton, each Lip Neutralization session is $200 for about 120 minutes, with a $75 deposit to book, and Mari’s menu says most clients need 2 to 4 sessions. This is the plan behind that number: what each visit does, what healing looks like week by week, and how it fits an Edmonton winter.
Your lips decide the session count. Your calendar decides the start date.
Why it’s never one and done
Lip neutralization layers warm, corrective pigment into lips that read cool, dark, purple or uneven, so the base looks more balanced. Lip skin is thin, and each layer has to heal before anyone can judge it, so the work is built in passes rather than in one long appointment. Mari’s lip neutralization guide describes it the same way: gradual pigment layers, a consultation first, and time to heal between visits, which matters even more in a dry Edmonton winter.
That’s also why your cousin’s number isn’t your number. A mostly violet lip, a brown lip and a lip with a dark border don’t take pigment the same way. The Makati studio of lip artist Kate Kanner notes that two sessions are common and three are typical for very dark or smoker’s lips. Mari’s own range is 2 to 4, depending on how much pigmentation there is and how your lips heal. Needing three isn’t a fail. It’s melanin doing its job.
Session one is the loud one: a week-by-week diary
The Madrid studio Tebori Brows puts it simply in its guide to lip neutralization: the colour you see right after a session is not the final colour. Here’s that idea as an Edmonton diary.
- Day of the session: lips look brighter and warmer than you expected, and a little puffy. Think “too many Hot Cheetos at the Oilers game,” not “final result.”
- The first days: flaking starts. Let it shed on its own; no picking, even during a long Zoom meeting.
- Around week two: “Where did it go?” One PMU training brand notes in its Spanish-language guide that the fresh brightness drops to roughly 60% at about two weeks. This is normal, and it’s the week most people panic.
- Weeks two to eight: the healed colour slowly shows itself. This is when the next pass can be planned from what actually stayed.
Aftercare follows Mari’s guide: use only the aftercare provided, keep lips hydrated but not drowned in balm, avoid sun, tanning beds and chlorinated pools while healing, and skip lip products with strong actives until you’re fully healed. If you want the colour theory behind why nudes go grey on cool lips, our nude-lipstick-turns-grey guide explains it.
What sessions two, three and four are for
Session two usually evens out the areas that healed lighter and adjusts the warmth, so the whole lip reads as one tone. Sessions three and four are only for lips that need them: deeper pigmentation, a stubborn dark border, or patches that held less colour. Nobody can promise a number at the first visit; the healed result decides.
Once the base is even, some clients add a soft colour with Lip Blush ($250, about 120 minutes, $75 deposit). Mari’s guide says that sequence is mapped at your consultation. Thinking about a 2027 wedding? Our toque-season wedding planner covers that side.
Your Edmonton winter, mapped
Many lip artists wait about six to eight weeks between sessions (Kate Kanner’s guide uses that window). Here’s what that can look like on an Edmonton calendar. It’s an example only; Marinelle sets your real spacing at the consultation, based on how you heal.
| Step | Example timing | Edmonton marker |
|---|---|---|
| Consultation and session one | Late October or early November | Toque on, furnace on |
| Session two | About mid to late December | The Edmonton Christmas Market runs Nov 27 to Dec 20, 2026 at Fort Edmonton Park |
| Session three, if needed | February | Deep-freeze weeks |
| Even base | Before spring photos | Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tue Mar 9 or Wed Mar 10, 2027 (Human Concern International) |
| Session four, if needed | Spring | Wedding and grad season |
- Nurses and shift workers: book each session at the start of a stretch of days off, so the bright, flaky days happen at home.
- U of A and MacEwan students: plan around exams; the consultation helps you pick dates that work.
- Newcomer moms: you need dates, not “someday.” Ask Marinelle to sketch your likely plan at the consultation.
- Fasting in Ramadan, or planning a trip? Mention it when you book so timing works for you.
From Marinelle’s chair
Marinelle Trevino, the Mari in Mari Esthetics, works one client at a time, so the consultation isn’t rushed. Before any pigment, she goes through your lip history (past lip tattoos, cold sores, filler), your undertone, and what you actually want to see in the mirror, and she does a patch or colour test when it’s appropriate. That conversation is what turns “2 to 4 sessions” into a plan for your lips. You can read more about Marinelle before you book.
What it really costs in Edmonton when you count every visit
Mari Esthetics charges per session, so you only pay for the sessions your lips need: at the current $200 per session, two sessions come to $400, three to $600 and four to $800. Here’s how three other Edmonton studios list lip neutralization on their own pages, checked October 21, 2026.
| Studio | Area | Price model | Session note on their page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mari Esthetics | West Edmonton (private home studio) | $200 per 120-min session, $75 deposit | Most clients need 2–4 sessions; consultation required |
| Studio N Beauty | Central Edmonton | 2-session package $800, 3-session package $950 (head artist), aftercare product included | 2 sessions mandatory; darker or two-toned lips need 3 |
| Brow Envy | South Edmonton | $700 or $800 + GST depending on artist; lips menu lists a 6-week touch-up at $150 | For dark lips, expect at least three sessions |
| Studio Vanassa | Whyte Ave | Starting at $399; touch-up within 2 months $210 + GST | May take multiple sessions |
Not a package. A plan. Whatever studio you choose, ask: Is it per session or a package? Is GST included? Is the deposit taken off the total? What happens if I need one more session than planned? In Mexico, Divya sells lip neutralization per session too, after an assessment that decides whether it suits you and how many sessions you might need. That “assess first, then plan” order is the one to look for. For lip blush prices, see our Edmonton lip blush cost guide.
Before your first session
- Come in with lips that aren’t cracked. Furnace air and minus 30 are hard on lips, so baby them for a week or two before.
- Tell Marinelle about cold sores, lip filler, medications and anything in your health history when you book.
- Expect a consultation first. Mari’s menu says it’s required to decide whether you’re a good candidate.
- Lemon, scrubs and lightening hacks won’t do what pigment does; our leave-the-lemon-in-your-water post explains why.
