You Quit Smoking. Your Lips Are Still Catching Up: An Honest Lip Neutralization Timeline for Edmonton Women

Quit smoking but your lips still look darker or greyish? An honest, no-lecture West Edmonton timeline: celebrate the quit, give your lips a season, get new spots checked, then book a Lip Neutralization consultation.

Marinelle Tala·

Maybe it was last winter. Maybe it was the morning you stood ten metres from the office door at -25, lighter in a mitten, and thought: I am done with this. Either way, you quit. Mornings smell better, stairs feel easier, and coffee finally tastes like coffee.

Then you catch your lips in the bathroom mirror. Still a little darker than you expected. Greyish at the edges, maybe patchy, and that “nude” lipstick still looks muddy. That is common, it is not a verdict, and there is an order to handling it: quit, wait, check, then consult. This is an honest, no-lecture timeline for Edmonton women who already did the hard part.

First: congratulations (seriously)

You walked away from the smoke break. In Edmonton, that ritual was already a commitment: the city’s Public Places Bylaw keeps smoking and vaping at least 10 metres away from doorways, windows, air intakes, patios and bus stops. That is a lot of cold sidewalk you never have to stand on again.

Still working on the quit, or quitting vaping now? Mari Esthetics is not a quit coach, but Alberta has free, local help. AlbertaQuits runs a free helpline (1-866-710-7848), a free text program, and QuitCore group sessions by phone, online or in person, for smoking or vaping. Questions about nicotine replacement or medications belong with your pharmacist or family doctor.

Why smoking can darken lips, in plain words

Your mouth has its own pigment cells, and smoke can nudge them into making more pigment. Spain’s periodontology society, SEPA, calls this “smoker’s melanosis” in a report written with Spain’s national tobacco-prevention committee. Madrid dermatologist Dra. Ana Molina, speaking to ConSalud, lists it among the ways tobacco shows up on skin, and her first fix is the one you already chose: stop smoking.

There is a second piece many women never hear. Argentine dermatologist Dra. Graciela Fernández-Blanco and her co-authors, writing in a Mexican dermatology journal, describe naturally deeper lip and gum colour as a normal genetic variation that is more common in deeper skin tones. So for a lot of Edmonton women, what you see is a mix: your own natural tone, which was never damage, plus some leftover darkening from the smoking years.

The good news: some of it may keep fading

SEPA describes smoker’s melanosis as harmless, not considered pre-cancerous, and usually reversible, fading over a year or more after quitting. Fernández-Blanco’s team also describes slow improvement over months to years. Nobody can promise how far yours will fade, but the direction is on your side.

That changes the plan. If you quit this summer, your lips are still a moving target. Covering them with corrective pigment right now means colour-matching something that may look different by spring. Give your lips a season or more to show you what stays.

When it’s a dentist or doctor question first

Some changes are not a beauty appointment. See your dentist (who also checks your gums) or your family doctor before any cosmetic treatment if you notice a spot that is new, raised, sore, bleeding, a single dark patch, or changing in size or colour, or if darkening hangs on long after you quit. Medellín permanent-makeup artist Catalina Trujillo says the same in her guide to neutralizing dark lips: a recent or changing spot gets checked by a health professional before anyone covers it. Brown marks on the skin above the lip are a doctor topic too, not lip PMU. Marinelle does not diagnose; she works with healthy, settled lips.

What Lip Neutralization can (and can’t) do for an ex-smoker

Lip Neutralization at Mari is a permanent-makeup treatment that uses carefully chosen pigments to balance cool, dark or uneven lip colour into a more even base. Once the base is even, soft colour can come later with Lip Blush, if you want it.

Trujillo puts the honest line well: neutralizing is not bleaching. It balances colour visually; it does not remove melanin. Here is what to expect at Mari:

  • About 2 hours, $200 CAD, with a $75 deposit that goes toward your total.
  • A consultation is required. Marinelle decides whether your lips are a good fit; darkening from smoking is looked at case by case, with no promises up front.
  • Change is gradual. Most clients need 2 to 4 sessions, depending on starting pigment and how your lips heal.

If you want the colour theory and the session-by-session picture, our first Lip Neutralization guide walks through it. And if anyone has suggested lemon or baking soda, please read our dark-lips myths post first.

Why Marinelle will ask if you still smoke or vape

Permanent makeup is a healing process. Chilean dermatologist Dra. Tatiana Riveros of Clínica Alemana explains that tobacco narrows blood vessels and slows healing, which is why doctors advise patients to quit before procedures. Spanish dermatologist Dr. Miquel Just-Sarobé makes a similar point about surgery in Actas Dermo-Sifiliográficas. That is surgical advice, not a Mari rule, but the takeaway is simple: be honest at your consultation, including about vaping, and follow Marinelle’s aftercare closely.

Your ex-smoker lip timeline, Edmonton edition

  • You quit a year or more ago and your lips have stopped changing: this is the sweet spot. Book a consultation now and check the booking page for any current offer.
  • You quit in the last few months: a consultation is still fine if you want expert eyes on it, but expect Marinelle may suggest waiting until your lips settle.
  • You’re planning a January quit: National Non-Smoking Week runs January 17 to 23, 2027. Quit first, bookmark this post, and let your lips show you what fades.

Meanwhile, November in Edmonton gives you plenty of nights out with bare-lip honesty: Farmfair at the EXPO Centre, the Butterdome Craft Sale in December, and Downtown Winterval on 104 Street on November 21. Those winter patios are smoke- and vape-free anyway. Bring the lip balm, not the lighter.

Quick answers

Will my lips get lighter after I quit? Often there is some improvement over months to years, according to SEPA and Fernández-Blanco’s team, but it is not guaranteed and your natural tone stays yours.

Can I get Lip Neutralization while I still smoke or vape? Tell Marinelle. Tobacco affects healing, and she decides at your consultation.

Does it remove the dark pigment? No. It balances colour visually; it does not remove melanin.

How many sessions? Most clients need 2 to 4.

What about one dark spot that showed up recently? Dentist or doctor first, always.
