Lash Extensions Falling Out After a Week? A West Edmonton Retention Guide (and 7-Day Test) for Edmonton’s Furnace Season
Bulb or no bulb, a day-by-day 7-Day Test, why Edmonton’s dry furnace air matters for lash glue, and when a fill becomes a new set. In West Edmonton: Classic Set $70, about 120 minutes, $25 deposit; fills $45–$55.

The short answer
Losing a few lash extensions a day is normal when each falls with a tiny natural lash attached. Lots falling out bare, or in the first 48 hours, usually points to the bond. At our private studio in West Edmonton, a Classic Set is $70 for about 120 minutes, with a $25 deposit; fills ($45–$55) are every 2–3 weeks.

It usually happens late at night. You brush your lashes, glance at the bathroom sink and count three, four, five extensions. By day seven one corner looks thin, and you’re wondering whether it was you, your lashes or the glue. You’re not the only one: early loss is one of the most common complaints in Edmonton lash reviews, and “where do I get the longest retention?” keeps coming up on r/Edmonton. This is the no-blame version, written for women in Glastonbury, The Hamptons, Lewis Estates, Callingwood and Granville who need a set to actually last until the next fill. Retention is part biology, part bond, part home habits and, in Edmonton, part furnace.
Bulb or no bulb? The first clue
Pick up a fallen extension and look at the end that sat closest to your eye. If a tiny natural lash is still attached, often with a little white or dark bulb at the root, that’s a normal shed. Your natural lash finished its growth cycle and took the extension with it. Everyone loses a few natural lashes every day, so losing a few extensions a day is expected too.
If the extension is bare, with no natural lash on it, the bond let go. The Spanish lash-supply educator Lash Canarias sums it up neatly: an extension that falls with its own lash is ordinary shedding; one that falls alone means the bond failed, and losing many in the first two days points to the application or the adhesive rather than your lash cycle. That matters for your peace of mind. A little pile of bare extensions on day two isn’t something you caused by sleeping on the wrong side once.
The 7-Day Test
Use this simple check on any new set, wherever you got it. It tells you what’s normal and when to speak up.
| When | What’s normal | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Days 1–2 | A stray lash or two | Are the ones falling bare? Are there lots? | Keep lashes dry for the first 24 hours; skip steam, saunas and heavy sweating. Many bare extensions now? Message your artist right away instead of waiting for the fill. |
| Days 3–5 | The odd extension, natural lash attached | Do the bulb check on anything you find | Cleanse daily with an oil-free lash shampoo and brush with a clean spoolie. |
| Days 6–7 | Slightly less density, even on both eyes | Count the gaps on each eye in daylight | If one eye or one corner is much thinner, look at your sleep side and rubbing habits (below). |
| Weeks 2–3 | Visible thinning as natural lashes cycle out | Roughly how much is left? | Book your fill and arrive with at least 40–50% of your extensions still on. |
Keep notes on your phone. A message like “day 2, about ten bare ones on the left eye” tells an artist far more than “they’re falling out.” And if you have a big night coming, put a new set on at least a week before so the test is behind you. For the holiday market at Farmfair International at the Edmonton EXPO Centre (November 6–8 this year), that means a new set by October 30.
Edmonton furnace season is hard on lash glue
Lash adhesive is a cyanoacrylate, and it cures using moisture in the air. Lash Canarias notes that most adhesive makers recommend roughly 40% to 60–70% relative humidity while it cures. Now picture an Edmonton house in January. Health Canada suggests keeping indoor humidity around 30% in winter to prevent mould, and a furnace working against a minus-25 morning can make indoor air feel drier still. In short, winter air here sits below the range lash glue is designed for.
That doesn’t doom winter lashes. It just means the first 24–48 hours matter more in Edmonton than they would in Vancouver. Keep the first night’s shower lukewarm and your face out of the spray, don’t park yourself next to a furnace vent or space heater, and leave the hot yoga for day two. If you’re curious, an inexpensive hygrometer will tell you what your bedroom really reads. It’s also completely fair to ask any lash artist how they handle dry winter air. For the full holiday-season plan, see our guide to lash extensions in Edmonton’s dry winter.
At-home retention killers (and the easy fixes)
- Oil near the lash line. Oil-based removers and cleansing balms soften the bond. Use an oil-free cleanser around the eyes.
- Heavy winter night creams. Rich creams creep upward while you sleep. Lash Canarias suggests applying night cream at least 30 minutes before bed so it doesn’t migrate onto your lashes. Cream at ten, pillow at ten-thirty.
- Face-down sleeping. If the same eye is always thinner, check which side you sleep on and try starting the night on your back.
- Rubbing after the toque comes off. Wool, scarves and cold, watery eyes all invite rubbing. Pat, don’t rub. We wrote more about lashes in toque and scarf season.
- Mascara on extensions. You shouldn’t need it, and taking it off means scrubbing.
- Sweat and steam. After the first day you can train; rinse and pat dry afterward. Our post on classic lashes for women who sweat covers gym days and hot yoga.
When your body is the reason
Sometimes it isn’t the bond or your routine at all. Hormonal changes, your period, pregnancy and breastfeeding, menopause, some medications, illness and stress can all affect how well extensions hold, according to the professional sources Lash Canarias reviewed. Many lash artists also notice heavier sheds in spring and fall. Lash Canarias is honest that it found no clinical studies measuring this, so treat it as an industry observation, not a rule. None of it is a failure on your part. Mention it at your next fill so the set can be planned around it. If November always seems harder on your lashes, read our post on the fall shed and your Classic Fill, and if you’ve been wondering whether lashes need a break, read lashes don’t hibernate.
Style can change how a set wears
Textured looks, like wispy spikes or the wet look, are precision work. Spain’s Gaze Institute says this year’s lash trends “punish improvisation”: stable spikes and carefully dosed adhesive are what separate the trend from a mistake. So if your spikes twist, cross or clump in the first week, mention it at your fill instead of blaming yourself. Fuller styles also show the same small loss more, because each gap stands out against the density.
Fill or new set? The rules for lash fills in West Edmonton
Here is how fills work at Mari Esthetics, taken straight from the live service menu:
- Classic Fill: $45, about 90 minutes. Under 40% left, or more than 4 weeks since your last appointment, may mean a full set.
- Hybrid Fill: $45, about 60 minutes. The window is shorter: more than 3 weeks, or under 40% left, may mean a full set.
- Volume Fill: $55, about 90 minutes, including removal of outgrown extensions and a lash bath. Past 4 weeks or under 40% may mean a full set.
All three are recommended every 2–3 weeks, and you should arrive with at least 40–50% of your extensions. The easiest way to stay inside the window is to book your next fill before you leave. If you want to compare what fills cost around the city, our Edmonton lash extension price guide lays them side by side, and our guide to lash extensions in Edmonton explains every set and its fill.
If it looks wrong, don’t pick. Message Mari
If you’re losing lots of bare extensions in the first few days, message Mari through the contact page right away so she can take a look. Don’t pull, pick or tweeze extensions off. The American Academy of Ophthalmology warns that rubbing or pulling can break natural lashes and even damage the follicle for good. If your eyes become red, itchy, swollen or painful, don’t try to remove the extensions yourself; see a doctor or eye doctor promptly.

Quick answers
Is it normal for lash extensions to fall out after a week? A few a day is normal if each one falls with a tiny natural lash attached. Many falling out bare, especially in the first 48 hours, points to the bond, so message your artist.
How long should lash extensions last? Extensions shed along with your natural lashes. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says they typically last three to four weeks; to keep them looking full, plan a fill every 2–3 weeks.
Does Edmonton’s cold, dry weather affect lash extensions? It can. Lash adhesive cures with moisture in the air and winter indoor air here is dry, so the first 24–48 hours matter most: keep lashes dry and away from steam and direct heat.
Why did my lashes fall out on one side? Usually it’s the side you sleep on or the eye you rub. Start the night on your back, and pat instead of rubbing when your eyes water in the cold.
When do I need a new set instead of a fill? At Mari Esthetics, under 40% left or more than 4 weeks (3 weeks for hybrid) may mean a full set. A Classic Set is $70, about 120 minutes, with a $25 deposit. Book here.
