Toque Down, Scarf Up, Eyes On: Volume Lashes for Edmonton Women Whose Eyes Do All the Talking This Winter
From now to March, your eyes are all Edmonton sees between the toque and the scarf. What 2D to 5D volume lashes mean, fluffy vs. wet look, soft vs. full, and how to keep them clean.

Late October in Edmonton. Your toque is pulled down to your brows, your scarf is pulled up to your nose, and you're waiting on the LRT platform or shuffling into Rogers Place for the Leafs game. From now until March, the only part of your face anyone actually sees is your eyes.
So let's talk about the lashes doing all that talking: what a Volume Set is, what "2D to 5D" means, how to choose your look, and how to keep lashes clean all winter.
The strip-lash routine, and the version you don't have to glue on
Even women who live in makeup have a strip-lash step. In a Vogue México beauty video, Becky G glues on her falsies mid-routine and calls it "póntelo y olvídalo," because she likes to let the glue sit and set before moving on. And Bad Gyal's makeup artist, Venus Plastik, told Vogue España that the secret to the singer's lashes is placing the falsies at the outer end of her natural ones to lengthen the eye.
Now picture that full, fluffy, lifted-corner look on a Tuesday morning, with no glue tube rolling around your console and no corner lifting in a chinook wind. That's a Volume Set. Fans, not falsies.
What 2D to 5D actually means
With classic extensions, one extension goes on each natural lash. With volume, each natural lash gets a tiny fan of two to five ultrafine extensions. That's the "D": 2D is two lashes in the fan, 5D is five.
At Mari Esthetics, the Volume Set uses lightweight multi-dimensional fans, including YY, W and UU shapes and premium premade 4D to 5D fans. Think of the letters as fan shapes. Every set is customized to your eye shape and the style you want, from soft everyday volume to a more glamorous finish.
A handy rule of thumb from Spanish lash educator Laura Catalán: lighter 2D to 3D volume reads like a really good coat of mascara, while 4D to 5D gives you the glam finish.
More lashes, not more weight
The big worry is "won't all those lashes wreck mine?" Volume fibres are much finer than classic ones, and Catalán explains that several ultrafine lashes can weigh less than a single classic extension. In her words, damage comes from a poor balance of weight and thickness for your natural lash, not from the number of lashes in the fan.
The Spanish lash academy Puravida Lash says 2026 is moving away from heavy, one-size-fits-all sets toward lightweight, customized work that respects the natural lash. Marinelle looks at your own lashes first and chooses what they can comfortably carry.

Fluffy or wet look? Pick your texture
- Fluffy, cloud-like volume. Soft, dense and dark along the lash line, like eyeliner you didn't have to draw.
- Wet look. Spikier and more defined, as if you just walked in from a snowflake flurry. ¡HOLA! covered the wet look this year as a viral mascara trend, and lash artists recreate that texture with closer, tighter fans.
Love a smoky liner? Fluffy usually feels like home. Like separated, editorial lashes? Ask about a spikier texture. Marinelle finalizes the design with you in the chair.
Soft volume or full glam: match it to your week
- Soft 2D to 3D for 12-hour shifts at the Misericordia, early meetings on 101 Street, classes at the U of A or MacEwan, or a school run in Callingwood where you'd like to look awake without trying.
- Fuller 4D to 5D if you already wear strip lashes most weekends, live for nights out on Whyte Ave, or want your lashes to be the first thing people notice above the scarf.
- A lifted outer corner in the spirit of Venus Plastik's trick, if you like a longer, more cat-eye shape. Ask about it; the final map depends on your eyes.
Bring a photo of your favourite strip lashes or a set you love, plus a clear photo of your own lashes with no mascara. Timing tip: book in the next couple of weeks and your set is fresh for the Leafs on October 24 and the first Battle of Alberta on October 28, and still inside your fill window for Halloween weekend.
Clean lashes are happy lashes
In September 2026, a small study presented at the ESCRS eye-surgery congress in Europe, reported in Spanish by El Universo, looked at young women who wear lash extensions often and found eyelid mites and oil-gland problems were common among frequent wearers. The study was small and had no comparison group, and the lead researcher, Dr. Tetiana Zhmud, said the findings don't mean people should avoid extensions. Her advice, in the ESCRS release, is simple hygiene: clean your eyelids twice a day with a gentle product and a lash cleansing brush.
- Before bed, gently cleanse the lash line to lift off foundation, sunscreen and the rich creams we all switch to in winter.
- Don't rub watery eyes with your mittens; pat with a clean tissue instead.
- If itching, redness or irritation doesn't settle, see an optometrist or your doctor.
To keep your set full, book a Volume Fill every 2 to 3 weeks (about 90 minutes, $55) and come in with at least 40 to 50% of your extensions still on. Under 40%, or more than 4 weeks since your last visit, may need a new full set. For dry-air retention tips and a holiday fill plan, see our winter lash guide.

Volume lashes in Edmonton: quick FAQ
Will volume lashes damage my natural lashes?
Lightweight fans that are properly matched to your natural lashes are designed to protect lash health. Marinelle checks what your lashes can carry before she designs your set.
What's the difference between 2D and 5D?
It's the number of extensions in each fan. 2D to 3D looks softer, like great mascara; 4D to 5D looks fuller and more glam.
Volume or hybrid?
Volume is the fullest and fluffiest. Hybrid mixes classic and volume lashes for something in between.
How long does it take, and what does it cost?
A Volume Set takes about 2.5 hours and costs $100, with a $25 deposit to book.
Can I wear them under a toque and scarf?
Yes. Pull your toque on and off gently and give your lashes a quick brush afterwards.
