The short answer
Prep for your Hybrid Fill in West Edmonton: $45 for about 60 minutes, $25 deposit, every 2–3 weeks with at least 40–50% of extensions left. Skip mascara, keep eye cream and oils off the lash line for 48 hours, and book one fill before the Muttart gala and one before the opera.
Next Friday, October 23, the Muttart Conservatory throws its Golden Anniversary Gala, and two weeks later Figaro takes the stage at the Jubilee. Two dressy nights, two weeks apart, which is almost exactly how often a hybrid set wants a refill. A Hybrid Fill in West Edmonton is $45 for about 60 minutes, with a $25 deposit, and it’s meant for every 2–3 weeks while you still have at least 40–50% of your extensions. Here’s the part nobody mentions: how much of that hour goes to new lashes depends on how clean your lashes are when you lie down. Show up clean, leave full.
Why clean lashes matter more than you think
Lash expert and esthetician Dionne Phillips put it simply in Vogue España: avoid oil-based products for a few days before your appointment, because they can leave residue that interferes with the adhesive, and arrive with clean lashes, without mascara, makeup, oils or creams. That’s really the whole idea behind fill prep. Lash glue needs a clean, dry lash to hold on to, and anything sitting on your lash line has to come off before something new can go on.
In Edmonton, that advice lands at the trickiest time of year. The furnace kicks on, faces feel tight, and the rich eye cream, the night balm and the coconut or argan oil come out of the drawer. They’re lovely for your skin. Your lash glue disagrees. Furnace season is balm season, so keep it below the lash line for a day or two before your fill.
The 48 hours before your Hybrid Fill
- Move the oils away from your eyes. Oil cleansers, cleansing balms, oily eye creams and overnight slugging layers stay off the lash line. The rest of your face can keep them.
- Skip mascara. Especially waterproof. If you wore some to dinner, take it off gently that night instead of scrubbing the next morning.
- Wash your lashes. Use a gentle, oil-free cleanser that’s safe for extensions the night before, let them dry completely, then brush them through.
- Leave the curler in the drawer. Extensions don’t need it, and bent lashes are harder to fill neatly.
- Do a toque lint check. Wool toques and fuzzy scarves leave fibres in lashes. A quick brush after the walk from the bus stop catches them.
The morning of: toque off, mascara off, lashes on
No eye makeup at all. If you want face makeup, keep it well away from your eyes. Go easy on the double-double, since you’ll be lying still with your eyes closed for about an hour, and use the washroom before you settle in. Wear comfy layers you can relax in. Phillips also suggests taking out contact lenses because your eyes stay closed for a long stretch, so bring your glasses if you wear them. Coming straight off a night shift with yesterday’s mascara? Don’t cancel. Wash your lashes gently and come.
Don’t pick it on the Henday
A twisted extension, or one that’s grown out and pokes sideways, is very tempting on a long drive or an LRT ride. Leave it. In an interview with Quién, Mexican lash artist Viviana Vega explained that natural lashes keep growing and push the extension out, and that anxious clients who pull them off end up taking their natural lashes with them. Her rules: no mascara or oil-based removers, hands off, and keep every touch-up. Grown-out lashes are exactly what your fill removes, cleanly. Bring them to the appointment.
Tempted to test the rules anyway? A Mexico City beauty writer already did it for you. In ELLE México, Nathalia Pavón broke every aftercare rule on purpose to see how long her extensions would last, and summed them up as “un COM-PRO-MI-SO,” a commitment. Here the commitment is small: clean lashes, hands off, and a fill every 2–3 weeks.
What happens in your 60 minutes
According to the live service description, the Hybrid Fill removes outgrown lashes, cleanses, and adds new classic and volume lashes that blend into your existing set, replacing what shed naturally and restoring fullness. The cleaner your lashes are when you arrive, the less of that hour goes to clearing away last night’s balm. Your two-fill gala calendar
The Muttart’s Golden Anniversary Gala is Friday, October 23, from 7 to 10:30 p.m., an 18+ evening celebrating 50 years of the conservatory ($60). Then Edmonton Opera’s The Barber of Seville, Rossini’s comedy about a very clever barber, plays the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on Thursday, November 5 and Saturday, November 7 at 7:30 p.m.
- Fill one: early in the week of October 19, so your lashes are settled and full by Friday night.
- Fill two: the week of November 2, about two weeks later and right inside the 2–3 week window.
- Waited too long? If it’s been more than 3 weeks or fewer than 40% of your extensions remain, you may need a Hybrid Set instead ($90, about 135 minutes, $25 deposit), so book early.
The private home studio is in West Edmonton, an easy drive from Callingwood, Lewis Estates, The Hamptons, Glastonbury, Granville and Rosenthal, and from St. Albert, Spruce Grove and Stony Plain.
