From the 8 a.m. Meeting to the Festival of Trees: Hybrid Lashes for Edmonton Women Who Need One Set for Every Room

Your week runs from an 8 a.m. meeting to a black-tie gala, and your lashes have to keep up. Here's what a Hybrid Set is, why it suits hooded and monolid eyes with the right map, and how to time it for Edmonton's party season.

Picture a Thursday in late November. You leave the house in the dark, scrape the windshield, and walk into an 8 a.m. meeting, a 7 a.m. shift change or a school drop-off line. By the time you head home it's dark again. And tonight there's a black-tie gala downtown, a holiday office party, or a night out dancing with the girls.

Same lashes, two very different rooms. That's the problem hybrid lash extensions in Edmonton solve.

Ghost lashes or full glam? Edmonton doesn't make you choose

This year, "ghost lashes," the barely-there, no-mascara look, were everywhere in Spanish-language beauty media. Then, as ¡HOLA! reported in June, Spanish actress Ester Expósito swapped her ghost lashes for visible, separated lashes with moderate volume, and the magazine's verdict was that la nueva tendencia es no elegir: the new trend is not choosing.

Even Ernesto Casillas, Zendaya's Mexican-American makeup artist, told Vogue México that the no-mascara look only works for specific looks, and that he wouldn't do a full glam face without mascara.

Your week already contains both looks. Monday wants soft, Friday wants definition, and a Hybrid Set sits right in the middle.

What a Hybrid Set actually is

At Mari Esthetics, a Hybrid Set is a mix of classic and volume lashes that gives a fuller yet textured look. It takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes, costs $90, and a $25 deposit holds your spot.

Verónica Castro, director of the Barcelona lash studio Vanitas Espai, described hybrids to Vanitatis as having the definition of a classic set, with more depth and volume, without looking artificial.

How it compares: a classic set places one extension on each natural lash for a mascara-like look. A volume set is the softest and fluffiest. A hybrid is the textured in-between, and a wispy style is one way that mix can be shaped, so ask your artist what suits you.

Hooded eyes, monolids and downturned corners: why the map matters

Artists plan where each length and fullness goes, often called a map. Castro explains that placing more volume in the centre helps open the eye, while extra fullness at the corners lengthens it.

This matters a lot in a city as diverse as Edmonton. Many women in our Filipino, South Asian, Arab, Latin American, East Asian and Indigenous communities have hooded eyes, monolids or downturned outer corners, and so do plenty of others. On those lids, a flat "natural" map can disappear, leaving only the outer lashes visible.

Before your set, ask your artist:

  • What will actually show when my eyes are open?
  • Would a more open-eye shape suit me better than a flat one?

Many eye shapes, one rule: design for the eye you have.

Made for Edmonton's party season

Late October to late November is when the city's calendar fills up. Whether your plans include Between Worlds, the Día de los Muertos celebration at Festival Place on October 30, the Edmonton Ballroom & Salsa Gala on November 7 and 8, or the Festival of Trees at the Edmonton Convention Centre from November 26 to 29, you want lashes that keep up. The Festival of Trees Gala even asks for velvet, pearls and a touch of sparkle.

  • Nurses and shift workers: from scrubs to sequins without touching a mascara wand.
  • Downtown professionals: the boardroom, the break room and the ballroom, with no strip lashes glued on in the parkade.
  • Busy and newcomer moms: a community holiday party on Saturday, the school run on Monday.

Colombian singer Karol G once admitted that when it comes to her lashes she's súper intensa. A Hybrid Set is for every intensa who'd rather not spend twenty minutes with a wand before a girls' night. And when the sun rises after 9 and sets before 5:30, lashes that look "on" under office lights are a small daily win.

Timing it: your set, your fill and the 3-week rule

A Hybrid Fill takes about 60 minutes and costs $45. Fills are recommended every 2 to 3 weeks, and you should come in with at least 40 to 50% of your extensions still on. If you're under 40%, or it's been more than 3 weeks, you may need a new full set. That window is shorter than many expect.

A simple plan: set around November 5 to 10 for the salsa-gala weekend, then a fill around November 20 to 25 for Festival of Trees week. Only one late-November event? Book the set between November 16 and 24. For the December fill plan and how dry Edmonton air affects your lashes, read our winter lash guide.

Before you book: a quick safety checklist

The Canadian Association of Optometrists points out that Canada has no regulations on who can apply lash extensions or which products are used, so it's worth asking a few questions:

  • What training and experience does the artist have?
  • Is the space clean, with hands washed and tools sanitized?
  • What's in the adhesive, especially if you have allergies?

Too much weight can also stress natural lashes, so choose a set that suits yours. On the day, come with clean lashes, no eye makeup and no oil on your face and give yourself time: it's over two hours. Tell your artist about allergies, sensitive eyes, contact lenses or recent eye issues. If you get redness, itching, swelling or crusting, see an optometrist, and never pull extensions off yourself.
