Your Lashes Got Quieter After 40. Your Calendar Didn't: Soft Volume Lashes in Edmonton
Lashes often get finer, shorter and sparser from our 40s on. Here's why soft volume (not big lashes) suits a sparse lash line, what to ask for, and when thinning means seeing a doctor first. From our West Edmonton studio.

It's 6:40 a.m. in Edmonton, the kitchen is still dark, and your hands are cold on the eyelash curler. Clamp, count, release. Then the mascara: one coat, a second, a third if you're brave, and a careful pass underneath. Somewhere in your forties your lashes got quieter, and the morning routine got louder to make up for it.
Sofía Vergara has a famous answer for that. "For me, you can never have too much volume," she told Glamour, as ¡HOLA! reported, describing three coats on top and a curler held for five seconds per eye. Spanish makeup artist Sergio Antón de las Nieves, who works with YSL Beauty Spain, takes the other side in Vogue España: the eyes don't always need volume, especially once the lids start to soften. We think they're both right. With lash extensions, volume doesn't have to mean big. For fine lashes it can mean soft, light and lifted, with no three-coat routine at all.
What changed (and why it isn't your mascara's fault)
If your lashes look flatter, shorter or gappier than they did at 30, you're not imagining it. Makeup artist Amanda Bell told the Spanish magazine Telva that from around 45, lashes tend to look flatter because they lose their natural curl, strength and density, from a mix of hormonal changes, ageing itself and a weakening hair follicle. Glamour México describes the same thing: lashes that become finer, shorter and sparser over time.
Lashes also renew in a natural cycle of roughly six to ten weeks, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, so you're always working with a mix of new and older hairs. Add a winter of furnace-dry air, tired eyes you rub after a long shift, and nightly scrubbing with makeup remover, and it's no wonder a soft lash line starts to feel like a daily project.
Why classic lashes can look see-through on a sparse lash line
Classic extensions place one extension on each natural lash. That's lovely when you have plenty of lashes. When your lash line has gaps, though, one-to-one can still look a little see-through, because there's nothing to attach to in the spaces.
A volume fan is a small cluster of very fine extensions placed on a single natural lash, so it covers more of the lash line without needing more lashes underneath. Our Volume Set uses lightweight multi-dimensional fans, including YY, W, UU and premium 4D to 5D premade fans, customized to your eye shape. If you want the full 2D-to-5D explanation and why fans can feel lighter than you'd expect, it's in our first volume lash guide.
Soft volume, not big lashes
If your lashes are fine or sparse, here's what lash artists usually suggest, and what you can mention to Marinelle when you book:
- Ask for soft density. Lighter fans fill the gaps without looking heavy. You can always build up later.
- Keep the length close to your own. Lash artists usually match extensions to what your natural lashes can comfortably carry, rather than going as long as possible.
- Ask for lift. A curl that opens the eye does a lot of the work length used to do. It's the whole point of that five-second curler clamp.
- Bring an honest photo. A picture of your lashes on a good mascara day is more useful than a celebrity screenshot.
Marinelle checks your natural lashes at the appointment and decides what they can safely hold. Sometimes that means starting softer than you planned, and that's the right call.
Outer corner or centre? Even the experts disagree
Antón de las Nieves likes to lift the outer lashes so the eye looks more awake and a drooping lid is less noticeable. Glamour México warns the opposite: loading up the outer corner can exaggerate that droop, so focus on the centre lashes to open the eye. Two respected sources, two different answers.
That's exactly why your lash map should be chosen for your eyes, not copied from a photo. Some women look most awake with a gentle lift in the middle, others with a soft flick at the outer edge. Working that out face to face is part of the appointment.
Your Edmonton fall calendar, minus the mascara
October in Edmonton fills up fast. There's the Inspire & Awaken women's leadership summit at The Westin Downtown on October 16 and 17, the Madonna Immaculate Collection tribute night at the Winspear on October 25 for everyone who grew up dancing to it, then Halloween, with office-party season right behind. Add the ordinary days: twelve-hour shifts at the Misericordia, Henday commutes from Spruce Grove and Stony Plain, school pickup in Callingwood, a cold St. Albert rink for the grandkids' hockey practice.
Soft volume means waking up with your lashes already done. No mascara flakes by hour ten of a twelve, no smudges after a river valley walk in the first snow. Fluffy at the Winspear, still fine at the 7 a.m. huddle.
When thinning isn't just age
Gradual change over the years is normal. Some signs aren't. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says to see a doctor if you're losing lashes from both eyelids, your eyebrows or scalp hair are thinning too, your lids are itchy, red or flaky, you feel pressure around your eyes, or your vision changes. If any of that sounds familiar, see your doctor or optometrist before booking any lash service.
Lash extensions are cosmetic. They don't regrow or strengthen lashes, and they aren't a treatment. If Marinelle notices something at your appointment that makes her think waiting is better, she'll tell you honestly.
Keeping it soft
A Volume Fill every two to three weeks keeps your set looking full. Come in with at least 40 to 50 percent of your extensions still on; if fewer than 40 percent remain or it's been more than four weeks, you may need a full set instead. For dry-air aftercare, see our guide to lash extensions in Edmonton's dry winter.
Quick questions
Am I too old for lash extensions?
There's no age cutoff. What matters is the health of your natural lashes and choosing a weight and length they can carry.
Will extensions ruin thin lashes?
Applied by a trained artist at the right weight and length, and removed by a professional instead of being picked or pulled off, extensions are meant to sit on your natural lashes without damaging them. Follow your aftercare and keep up with fills.
Volume or classic for sparse lashes?
On a gappy lash line, soft volume usually looks fuller because each fan covers more space. Classic can be perfect if you still have plenty of lashes. Marinelle will help you choose.
If your lashes got quieter, start soft
Retire the three-coat routine before the busiest stretch of the year. Book a Volume Set with Marinelle at our private West Edmonton studio near WEM. It takes about two and a half hours, and you can add a note that your lashes are fine or sparse so she can plan a soft map for you.
