Turkey, Wine and a Tired Face: The Post-Thanksgiving Hydra Facial Reset for Edmonton Women Going Back to Their Desk
Leftovers in the fridge, furnace on, camera-on Tuesday: why skin can look hungover after Canadian Thanksgiving, what not to do, and how one Hydra Facial in West Edmonton resets it before the Oilers homestand.
Marinelle Tala·

Tuesday morning, October 13. The fridge is a tower of mismatched containers: turkey, stuffing, half a pumpkin pie, and the cranberry sauce nobody admits to liking. The furnace clicked on before your alarm did. Somebody finished the wine with a leftover sandwich last night (no judgment, it may have been you). And now there's a 9 a.m. camera-on meeting, a school drop-off line in Lewis Estates, or a shift at the Misericordia, and your face clearly did not get the memo that the long weekend is over.
You're not imagining it. Here's why skin can look hungover after a Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, what not to do about it this morning, and why one Hydra Facial in West Edmonton is the cleanest reset before the Oilers homestand starts on Thursday.
Canadian Thanksgiving was yesterday. Your skin is still on holiday.
In Alberta, Thanksgiving Day is a general holiday on the second Monday of October, which this year landed on October 12. For a lot of us, that meant three or four days of richer food than usual, a glass (or three) of wine or whisky, later nights, makeup left on after the dishes, and a skincare routine that quietly took the weekend off too. Meanwhile, the furnace has been running since the first cold snap.
Spanish-language beauty media has a name for what that looks like the next morning: cara de resaca, hangover face. Cosmetologist Raquel González of Perricone MD told Glamour España that skin really can have a hangover, and that the main short-term effect is inflammation: puffy, dull, a little sallow. And it isn't only the wine. Glamour México has written about sugar's link to inflammation in the skin, so the stuffing and the pie get a vote too.
None of this is a reason to feel guilty about a family dinner. It's just a reason to give your skin a proper reset instead of a panicked one.
What a "skin hangover" looks like (and what to stop doing)
You'll probably recognize a few of these:
- Puffy eyelids that take until lunch to settle
- A grey, sallow tone that concealer just sits on top of
- Foundation that pills, slides, or clings to dry patches
- A shiny T-zone with tight, thirsty cheeks
- Congestion around the nose and chin after days of heavy food and indoor heat
The instinct on a Tuesday like this is to attack. Please don't. Skip the gritty scrub, the pore strips, and the brand-new acid peel you bought on sale. Don't skip moisturizer just because you feel greasy, either; that combination of oily and dehydrated is its own thing, and we went deep on it in our oily-but-thirsty furnace-season guide. If clogged pores are the loudest problem, our post on slugging season and congestion explains when a Deep Cleansing Facial makes more sense.
You don't need a perfect weekend to deserve a reset. You need one good appointment, not a five-product emergency routine.
Why a Hydra Facial fits the Tuesday-after
Our Hydra Facial is a non-invasive, multi-step treatment that deeply cleanses, exfoliates, extracts impurities, and infuses the skin with hydrating, nourishing serums. It's designed to improve texture, unclog pores, reduce congestion and brighten dull skin, with no downtime, and it suits all skin types. In other words, it handles both halves of a leftovers weekend at once: the "dirty" (congestion, buildup, the makeup you slept in) and the "dehydrated" (furnace air, wine, salt).
Dermatologist Carlos Morales Raya, speaking to Vogue México, describes a monthly professional cleanse as part of a healthy skin routine: it clears away dead cells and traces of pollution and helps normalize surface hydration. Think of this week's appointment as the first one of the season, timed for when your skin needs it most.
The details: about 150 minutes, $100, with a $25 deposit to hold your time. It's a long, unhurried appointment, which is honestly part of the point after a weekend of hosting. If you only have a lunch hour, our 50-minute Basic Facial is a lighter option, but the Hydra Facial is the fuller reset. Book your Hydra Facial here.
Book this week: the Oilers homestand is the bonus calendar
If the long weekend wasn't enough of an event, the Oilers are about to spend most of October at Rogers Place. According to the team's 2026-27 schedule release, the homestand runs:
- Thursday, Oct 15 vs Utah Mammoth
- Tuesday, Oct 20 vs Minnesota Wild
- Thursday, Oct 22 vs Carolina Hurricanes
- Saturday, Oct 24 vs Toronto Maple Leafs
- Monday, Oct 26 vs Detroit Red Wings
- Wednesday, Oct 28 vs Calgary Flames, the first Battle of Alberta of the season
Book midweek and your skin gets a few calm days to settle before jersey selfies, ice-level photos and Whyte Ave after the game. Many people feel their skin looks its best in the days after a Hydra Facial. We won't promise a glow countdown, but a Tuesday or Wednesday booking puts you in good shape for Leafs Saturday and the Flames the week after. Same face, better canvas. (For the makeup side of things, see our Hydra Facial makeup prep guide for party season.)
The 48 hours after: keep the reset
- Water first. Boring, but it works.
- Gentle cleanse, morning and night. No scrubs for a couple of days.
- A humectant moisturizer (think hyaluronic acid or glycerin) to hold on to the hydration.
- SPF, even under grey October skies.
- Skip hot yoga, the sauna, or a steamy face-blast on the day of your appointment.
- Retinoids and acids: ask Marinelle during your appointment when to bring them back.

FAQ
I overdid the wine and leftovers. Is a Hydra Facial OK right after?
The Hydra Facial is gentle with no downtime, but book it for a day when you feel well enough to lie back and relax for about two and a half hours. If you're actually sick, reschedule. Marinelle looks at your skin in person before she starts.
How soon before an Oilers game should I book?
Many people like a few days between the facial and a big night, and makeup the same day is usually fine. Check the booking page for open times that work around your game.
Hydra, Deep Cleansing or Basic: which one after Thanksgiving?
The Hydra Facial is the fullest reset: cleanse, exfoliation, extraction and hydrating serums in one appointment. If breakouts and clogged pores are the main issue, the 90-minute Deep Cleansing Facial may suit you better. If you only have 50 minutes, go Basic.
Will it help furnace-dry skin too?
Hydrating, nourishing serums are part of every Hydra Facial. For the full story on skin that's oily and thirsty at the same time, read the furnace-season guide linked above.
