Shiny by Noon, Tight by Supper: The Hydra Facial for Edmonton's Oily-but-Thirsty Furnace-Season Skin
Shiny T-zone by lunch, tight cheeks by supper? Oily and dehydrated aren't opposites. The signs, the habits that backfire, and how a Hydra Facial in West Edmonton balances both.
Marinelle Tala·

Thanksgiving weekend in Edmonton, and the furnace has officially stopped taking days off. Hot shower, a wind that finds every gap in your scarf, then a full day somewhere the heat is cranked. By noon your forehead is shiny enough to check your lipstick in. By supper your cheeks feel tight, and your foundation is sliding off your nose while it cracks around your mouth.
Your forehead thinks it's July. Your cheeks know it's November. You're not imagining it. Here's why skin can be oily and thirsty at the same time, the habits that quietly make it worse, and how a Hydra Facial at our West Edmonton studio works on both halves in one appointment.
Oily and dehydrated are not opposites
"Oily" is about oil, the sebum your skin makes. "Dehydrated" is about water, and how well your skin holds on to it. They're two different dials.
Spanish dermatologist Dra. Soledad Sáenz Guirado made exactly this point to eldiario.es this week: skin can have excess oil and still be dehydrated, and your skin type isn't fixed. It shifts with the season, the climate, your age and the treatments you use. She also noted that nearly everyone is a little combination, because the T-zone simply has more oil glands and bigger pores than the cheeks.
Add an Edmonton October, with cold air outside, furnace air inside and a scalding shower in between, and no wonder your skin can't decide what it is.
Signs you're oily but thirsty
A report from the Spanish news agency EFE, published in Mexico by Revista Q, lists the tell-tale signs that oily skin is actually short on water. Our version:
- Your shine looks greasy and dull rather than glowy.
- Makeup slides on your nose and forehead but flakes or cracks on your cheeks and around your mouth.
- Your face feels tight right after you wash it.
- Fine lines look deeper in winter than they did in August.
- Products that never bothered you suddenly sting a little.
One honest note: persistent redness, painful breakouts or a rash are worth a visit to your doctor or a dermatologist.
Three habits that make it worse
1. Scrubbing the shine. A harsh cleanser and nightly exfoliating feel like the fix, but that squeaky-clean feeling is usually your barrier taking a hit. The EFE report names over-exfoliating and very hot showers among the habits that weaken it, and both are easy to fall into after a cold walk from the Lewis Estates park and ride.
2. Skipping moisturizer because "I'm oily." Oil doesn't hydrate your skin, so the dry patches just get drier.
3. Burying tight cheeks in heavy cream. The opposite move doesn't help either. Esthetician Marta García told ¡HOLA! that winter tightness doesn't always mean a lack of hydration, and that adding more cream isn't the answer. What works, she said, is simplifying your routine and focusing on repair.
What a Hydra Facial does for both halves
Our Hydra Facial is a non-invasive, multi-step facial that deeply cleanses, exfoliates and extracts impurities, which takes care of the oily, congested part. Then it infuses your skin with hydrating, nourishing serums, which takes care of the thirsty part. Expect smoother texture, clearer pores and brighter skin, with no downtime. It's suitable for all skin types.
Spanish singer Natalia Jiménez told NewBeauty en Español that she's fascinated by the Hydrafacial, and that since becoming a mom she looks for treatments that are functional and effective. That's the right lens for busy Edmonton women, from nurses coming off a shift at the Misericordia to moms juggling hockey practice: it isn't a quick appointment, but it does several jobs at once and you go straight back to your life afterwards.

Your light routine between visits
Keep it to three or four steps.
- A gentle cleanser. If your face feels squeaky afterwards, it's too strong.
- Hydrating ingredients on damp skin. Look for humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid. Miriam Molina of Usu Cosmetics, quoted in the EFE report, suggests applying hyaluronic acid on slightly damp skin and then sealing it with a moisturizer, rather than putting it on bone-dry skin.
- A lighter moisturizer. Oily-but-thirsty skin usually does better with gels and fluids than with thick balms.
- SPF in the morning, even on grey days.
- Exfoliate less, not more, and keep showers warm instead of scalding.
Drink your water, sure. But your skin also needs help holding on to it.

FAQ
Can oily skin really be dehydrated?
Yes. Oil and water are different things, so skin can make plenty of oil and still be low on water.
Should oily skin skip moisturizer in winter?
No. Pick a lighter texture, like a gel or fluid, instead of skipping it.
Is a Hydra Facial OK for combination or acne-prone skin?
The treatment is described as suitable for all skin types, and Marinelle checks your skin first. Active, painful acne is best seen by a doctor or dermatologist.
Is there downtime?
No downtime, per the treatment description.
Hydra Facial or Deep Cleansing Facial?
Deep Cleansing is for congestion and breakouts. Hydra is for congestion plus thirst, when you want balance and glow.
Stop scrubbing the shine. Let's balance it.
