After the Face Paint: A West Edmonton Deep Cleansing Facial Reset for Post-Halloween Skin
Halloween makeup, late nights, then toques and hockey helmets: Edmonton skin gets congested fast. Here's how to protect it on the night and reset it in November with a deep cleansing facial.
Marinelle Tala·

Edmonton does spooky season big. There's Fright Night at Galaxyland, a long run of haunted-house nights at Deadmonton, and trick-or-treating at West Edmonton Mall on Halloween Saturday. Then, almost overnight, it's toque, scarf and hockey-helmet season. By mid-November, a lot of skin looks and feels it: clogged pores, blackheads and little rough bumps on the chin and forehead.
This guide covers how to protect your skin before and during Halloween, and how to reset it afterwards with a Deep Cleansing Facial in West Edmonton.
Edmonton's spooky calendar (and what it does to your pores)
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, October 31, 2026, and the season stretches well past it. West Edmonton Mall hosts Galaxyland Fright Night on Saturday, October 24, and its Trick or Treat Festival runs on the 31st from 3 to 6 pm. Deadmonton is open from September 25 to November 7. And because Edmonton Octobers are cold, a lot of families trick-or-treat indoors, as Edmonton.Family's Halloween roundup points out.
That's a lot of face paint, heavy costume makeup and late nights. A dermatologist at Baylor College of Medicine notes that costume-store makeup can be oil-based and harder to remove, and that oil-based products can clog pores and lead to breakouts.
Before the party: patch test and pick your products
- Patch test first. Health Canada suggests putting a little product behind your ear or on your inner forearm, then washing it off after 24 hours. If the spot is red, itchy, burning or blistered, don't use it. Even products labelled "hypoallergenic" can cause a reaction.
- Give it time. Baylor's dermatologist notes that a reaction to new makeup often shows up two to three days later, not right away, so test early in the week, not an hour before you leave.
- Choose "non-comedogenic" when you can. That label means the product is made not to clog pores, and the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends it for acne-prone skin.
- Don't share kits. Shared makeup, brushes and sponges spread bacteria, so bring your own to the party.
- For kids: Health Canada's advice for children's cosmetics is to use products made for their age and never use markers or craft paint on skin.
On the night: take it all off (yes, even at 1 a.m.)
The AAD is clear that sleeping in makeup, even non-comedogenic makeup, can cause acne. When you get home from the party, however late it is:
- Double cleanse. Start with a makeup remover (an oil or cream remover works well for heavy or waterproof paint), then follow with a gentle face wash for your skin type.
- Be gentle. Don't scrub. Use your fingertips and lukewarm water, and go slowly around the eyes.
- Follow the label. The FDA advises removing face paint and adhesives, like spirit gum, exactly as the product directs.
November in Edmonton: toques, scarves and hockey helmets
Once Halloween is over, a different kind of breakout starts. The AAD calls it acne mechanica: breakouts caused by gear and clothing that trap heat and sweat against your skin and rub it. Hockey players often get it on the chin and forehead, and it usually starts as small, rough bumps. A scarf pulled over your face at a cold bus stop or a toque pulled low for a long walk can add the same friction and warmth.
- Keep a clean, soft layer between gear and skin, and wash it often.
- Choose moisture-wicking fabrics for rec hockey, skating or winter runs.
- Wash your face soon after you sweat, especially after the rink.
- If breakouts are painful or won't settle, talk to your pharmacist or doctor.

When to book your post-Halloween reset
Aim for the first or second week of November, once any irritation from costume makeup has calmed down. If your skin is red, swollen or blistered, or a reaction hangs on, see a doctor first, as Health Canada advises, and book your facial once it's settled. After that, a facial every 4 to 6 weeks keeps your skin on track through the toque months, and you'll be glowing in time for holiday photos.
