How Often Should You Get a Facial? The West Edmonton Answer for Furnace Season
Monthly or twice a year? Spain's experts disagree. A Basic Facial in West Edmonton (50 min, $50, $25 deposit) and a winter calendar to the Christmas Market.

Short answer: it depends on your skin and on which facial you mean. For a gentle maintenance facial like the Basic Facial, many people do well with one about every 4–6 weeks through an Edmonton winter. The Basic Facial in West Edmonton is 50 minutes, $50 CAD, with a $25 deposit to hold your spot, and it covers a cleanse, gentle exfoliation, a mask chosen for your skin, moisturizer and SPF. Read the full guide to facials in West Edmonton, or book your Basic Facial now.
This one is for the women of Lewis Estates, Callingwood, The Hamptons, Glastonbury, Granville, Rosenthal and Windermere (and everyone driving in on the Henday from St. Albert, Spruce Grove and Stony Plain) who had a facial once, loved it, and never figured out when to go back. Winter tires on? Then it's a good week to book the first facial too.
Monthly or twice a year? Why the experts seem to disagree
Search this question in Spanish and you'll find skin experts in Madrid, Barcelona and Lima giving very different answers. Esthetics expert Noe Ferreño told Marie Claire España that a facial every month to month-and-a-half is ideal, with oilier skin leaning shorter and dry or sensitive skin leaning longer. In Glamour España, Myriam Yébenes says at least once a month, while dermatologist Paula Jaén says monthly suits oily skin but normal skin is fine every three or four months. Facialist Elvira Peral, speaking to InStyle España, says two deep cleans a year is generally enough.
So who's right? Mostly, all of them. They're often talking about different treatments and different skin. A deep clean with extractions is a bigger treatment, and it doesn't need to land on your calendar every month. A gentle maintenance facial is a different thing, and it's the one that can sit on a steady rhythm without overdoing it.
Ferreño's best advice isn't a number at all. Watch your skin. When it looks dull, feels tight, or your pores look busier than usual, that's your cue.
A deep clean is an event. A Basic Facial is a habit.
The Basic Facial is built for regular skin maintenance and for people who are short on time. In 50 minutes your skin gets cleansed, gently exfoliated, treated with a mask that suits it, then moisturized and finished with SPF. Nothing dramatic, nothing that should leave you red for the weekend. If it's your first facial and you want to know what actually happens in the chair, our 50-minute skinimalism guide walks you through it.
Here's where furnace season tricks people. When skin feels rough and tight, the instinct is to scrub harder at home: another cleanser, another exfoliating pad. Barcelona facialist Esther Moreno told La Vanguardia that skin doesn't need to be over-cleaned, it needs to be cleaned well, and that triple and quadruple cleansing without a reason can throw your skin barrier off balance. Our Edmonton version: don't add a fourth cleanser. Add a calendar.

Come a little more often if...
Lima dermatologist Carla Rivas, quoted by Dermatología Peruana, calls a professional facial part of a care routine rather than a luxury, and notes that people who work in kitchens, workshops or around smoke and grease may need one more often. That describes a lot of Edmonton. You might lean toward the 4-week end if:
- Your skin is on the oilier side or gets congested easily.
- You wear makeup most days.
- You work in a restaurant kitchen, a shop, a plant, a warehouse or on a site with dust and grease.
- You wear a mask for long shifts, like so many nurses and care aides do.
Come a little less often if... your skin is dry, sensitive or reactive, your routine is very simple, or you're using strong products your doctor prescribed. In that last case, ask your doctor first and tell Marinelle what you're using. A gentle facial should never leave you feeling raw.
Your West Edmonton winter facial calendar
Here's one example of how a 4–6 week rhythm can line up with a real Edmonton winter. Take it as an example, not a rule:
- Visit 1, late October or the first days of November. The furnace is running and your skin is starting to feel tight. When the furnace clicks on, so does your facial clock.
- Visit 2, the week of November 23. The Edmonton Christmas Market opens at Fort Edmonton Park on Friday, November 27 and runs until December 20. Fresh skin for opening weekend, mulled wine in the market huts, and every holiday photo after that.
- Visit 3, the first or second week of January. A new-year reset before Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival on Alberta Avenue, January 16–17, 2027, a weekend outdoors celebrating many of the cultures that make up this city.
Oilier or congested skin? Lean toward 4 weeks and think about swapping one visit for a Deep Cleansing Facial. Dry or sensitive skin? Lean toward 6 weeks or longer. Marinelle will suggest a rhythm for your skin at your first visit. The easiest way to keep it going is to book the next one before you leave. Studio hours change, so check the booking page for live times.
When a Basic Facial isn't enough
- Blackheads, congestion or bumps that don't budge: book a Deep Cleansing Facial (90 minutes, $80, with skin analysis, a double cleanse and gentle extractions). Its live description recommends it every 4–6 weeks.
- Fine lines and that tired look: the Anti-aging Facial (75 minutes, $100).
- A big event and you want the glow: the Hydra Facial (150 minutes, $100). For timing a facial before a photo day, see our photo season post.
Anything painful, infected, or a rash that won't settle is a job for your doctor first, not a facial.
Between visits (keep it short)
A gentle cleanser once or twice a day, a moisturizer that holds up to furnace air, and SPF even on bright snow days. That's enough. New to Edmonton winters? Our first-winter guide for newcomers has the details, and our glass-skin winter habits post has a few more ideas.
Quick questions
How often should I get a Basic Facial?
It depends on your skin. Experts quoted in Spanish beauty media give anything from monthly to every few months. For a gentle maintenance facial through an Edmonton winter, many people do well with about every 4–6 weeks, and Marinelle will suggest what suits you.
Is a monthly facial too much in winter?
A gentle maintenance facial usually isn't. If your skin feels tight or sensitive afterward, tell Marinelle and space them out.
Basic or Deep Cleansing?
Basic is maintenance: cleanse, exfoliate, mask, moisturize, SPF. Deep Cleansing is the bigger treatment with extractions, for when congestion has built up.
