Alberta Time Means Brighter Evenings: An Edmonton Anti-Aging Facial Plan for Snow-Glare Season

Alberta won't fall back on November 1, so Edmonton's winter evenings stay brighter. Here's how to enjoy the extra daylight, handle snow glare and keep fine lines in check with daily SPF and an anti-aging facial.

Marinelle Tala·

Here's something Edmonton hasn't had in a very long time: a winter without "falling back." On Sunday, November 1, most of North America sets its clocks back an hour. Alberta won't. That means brighter late afternoons all winter, and more time for a river valley walk, a skate or a few errands in daylight after work.

It also means more time in the winter sun, and more time squinting at snow glare. If fine lines and tired-looking skin are on your mind, this is a good winter to build a simple plan: daily SPF, a little extra protection outdoors, and an Anti-aging Facial in West Edmonton to give your skin some proper care.

What Alberta Time changes this winter

Alberta has moved to permanent Alberta Time (what we used to call Mountain Daylight Time). Starting this November, our clocks no longer switch back to Mountain Standard Time, and timeanddate confirms there's no fall back here on November 1, 2026. The province says it will gather feedback after the first full year.

In practice, sunsets land about an hour later than past winters. In December, Edmonton's sun sets between about 5:13 and 5:23 pm, and it rises later too, between about 9:30 and 9:50 am. Even local ski hills are adjusting: Snow Valley says lifts will open at 9:30 am this season because of the switch.

Edmonton's winter sun is low, but snow nearly doubles it

It's easy to think sunscreen is a summer thing. Our winter UV is usually low, but Environment and Climate Change Canada points out that fresh white snow can reflect over 80% of UV rays, so you can get almost twice as much. Its advice is to cover up and use sunscreen if you'll be outside for more than an hour on a bright, snowy day.

Alberta Health Services adds that skating, snowshoeing or a long walk can expose you to more UV than you'd expect, and your face is one of the few spots a parka doesn't cover. Clouds don't fully protect you either: the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says up to 80% of UV gets through them, and UVA, the "aging" rays, passes through window glass. So yes, the drive along the Henday or the Whitemud counts.

Why the sun is the fine-lines story

According to the AAD, unprotected sun exposure is the most preventable cause of early skin aging, and in every skin tone it can make dark spots and uneven pigmentation worse. The good news is that a little habit goes a long way. In a randomized trial published in 2013, adults who used broad-spectrum sunscreen every day showed 24% less skin aging over four and a half years than people who used it only now and then.

One Edmonton-specific tip from the AAD: sunscreen doesn't love extreme temperatures, so don't leave your bottle in a frozen car overnight. Keep it in your bag or by the door.

Where an Anti-aging Facial fits

Sunscreen protects. A facial gives your skin some hands-on care. Our Anti-aging Facial is a rejuvenating 75-minute treatment designed to deeply hydrate, firm and revitalize your skin while softening the appearance of fine lines. It includes:

  • Gentle exfoliation to smooth away dull surface skin
  • Targeted anti-aging serums
  • A relaxing facial massage
  • A nourishing mask for smoother, plumper, radiant-looking skin

It's $100 for 75 minutes, with a $25 deposit to hold your spot. Think of it as a partner to your daily SPF, not a replacement for it. And if your skin feels more dull or congested than lined, ask about our Hydra Facial, a longer multi-step cleanse with hydrating serums.

A simple Alberta Time skin routine

  • Mornings (yes, the dark ones): Moisturizer first, then a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher as your last step. AHS suggests putting it on about 20 minutes before you head out.
  • After-work plans: Heading to the rink or out for a walk in the extra daylight? Reapply first. The AAD recommends reapplying every two hours when you're outdoors.
  • Bright snowy days: Wear sunglasses or goggles, a toque or hat, and pull a scarf or buff over the lower half of your face, as AHS suggests.
  • Lips count too: A lip balm with SPF is an easy add.
  • Book a seasonal reset: Pair your SPF habit with professional care. Book a facial and ask Marinelle what schedule suits your skin.

Anti-aging facial in Edmonton: quick FAQ

Do I really need sunscreen in an Edmonton winter?

On bright, snowy days, yes. Snow can reflect most of the sun's UV back at you, and UVA gets through clouds and car windows. Health authorities recommend broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin.

How long is the Anti-aging Facial, and what does it cost?

It's 75 minutes and $100, with a $25 deposit when you book.

Will a facial get rid of wrinkles?

No facial erases wrinkles. This one is designed to hydrate, firm and revitalize your skin and soften the appearance of fine lines. Daily sunscreen is still the best way to protect your skin from new sun damage.

How often should I book?

It depends on your skin and your goals. Ask at your appointment and Marinelle can suggest a schedule that fits.

What if I notice a spot that's changing?

If a mole or spot changes, itches or bleeds, see your doctor or a dermatologist before booking any facial.
